We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. A military base is a facility directly owned and operated by and/or for the military or one of its branches that shelters military equipment and personnel, and facilitates training and operations.

Jurisdictional definition

Bases are usually extra-legal jurisdictions not subject to civil law. They can range from small outposts to military cities containing up to 100,000 people. Some military bases may belong to a different nation or state than the territory surrounding it.

Fort Jefferson in Florida in the United States is an example of a military base although no particular size or layout is typical. Fort Jefferson is no longer in use and is currently part of the Dry Tortugas National Park.

How much economic gain does a military base add to a community?
Q. In other words, what is the average economic gain that a military base brings to a community? I was in the AF for 9 years, and we were always told that we brought in some ridiculous amounts of money. Just wondering if that was all jargon or not because every military base I've ever been to has been located in a real hellhole...or in the middle of nowhere. Thoughts?? I agree with the BRAC list comments...I remember when the DoD closed Fort Dix in NJ. Wrightstown and surrounding areas practically shut down, the only reason they stayed in business was because of Mcguire AFB. Every few years Fort Drum was put on the list and all of upstate NY and Jefferson Co. were screaming to not close the base...err...Fort.

A. a military base brings LOADS of money into a community through civilian jobs, sales taxes through purchases the individuals stationed there make locally, home sales and rent, sales in general to units on the installation through local acquisitions. As for the midle of nowhere or arm pit locations, it most likely they kept them away from "prime locations" due to the noise factor coming from the installations. Also the older ones were built as frontier forts and just updated over teh decades. The newer ones were built where they were because that is where the most land could be easilly gotten with minimal problems like houses to condemn, higher prices near the "good cities & towns) etc.

How did the US get a military base in Cuba?
Q. Being Fidel Castro anti american how it was possible for the US to have a military base right there?

A. A lease was signed after the Spanish Ameican war. Then in 1934 it was negotiated again. That increased the annual payment and requires that both parties agree to the US leaving. One alone cannot make the move. When Castro took over the check was sent and they cashed it. That is recognized as the new goverment accepting the treaty. They have never cashed another check but they are sent every year. The Navy is not going anyplace!
