A military base is a facility directly owned and operated by and/or for the military or one of its branches that shelters military equipment and personnel, and facilitates training and operations.

Jurisdictional definition

Bases are usually extra-legal jurisdictions not subject to civil law. They can range from small outposts to military cities containing up to 100,000 people. Some military bases may belong to a different nation or state than the territory surrounding it.

Fort Jefferson in Florida in the United States is an example of a military base although no particular size or layout is typical. Fort Jefferson is no longer in use and is currently part of the Dry Tortugas National Park.

Why are military bases visible on google earth?
Q. I have noticed that many military bases that are supposed to be secret/blocked from the public can be seen on google earth. For example, Area 51, which is perhaps the most guarded goverment location, is clearly visible on google earth. (I was bored and found this..hah) Why can you see things like this on Google earth? It seems very unsafe. Are there any places that are censored? yes, everyone knows where these bases are. What I mean is that you can zoom into it and see lots of detail, including buildings and such. Shouldn't that be censored out?

A. If the Government had something they didn't want you or anyone else to see, they would make it that way.

How big are the houses on military bases?
Q. My husband is in the army and we will be moving on base with him soon. I was wondering how big the houses are for a family of 3. I guess I want to know if I need to find other places of storage to store some of my sons baby things. I also would like to know what life on base is like? How hard is it to get employment at hospitals on base? What is there to do on base? This is my first time in the military and I haven't been around it ever any input would be greatly appreciated.

A. First of all, I just HAD to say that I LOVE your name (my daughter is named Kyla). But to answer your question, it really depends on where you are stationed. Some bases have really nice, brand new, or just renovated housing and others well... not so nice, but liveable. For a family of 3 you would be allowed a 3 bedroom house. I have lived on Ft Riley and Ft Gordon and both houses (2 bedroom) were about 1200 sq feet. Not the best condition, but like I said liveable. As for what is there to do, again, depends where you live. There is always an Army Community Service where you can get information about the local community and what there is to do. In fact if you look up the base you are going to online, you may be able to get a welcome… [cont.]

How many non-US military bases are in the US?
Q. How many non-US military bases are in the US and which country has bases here? I know that there are US military bases overseas (Japan, Germany, Iraq, etc..) so I was wondering if any of them or other countries has bases in the US.

A. While there are no full bases there are sections of US bases that are run by Non-US military.
