What are the pros and cons of joining the coast guard?
Q. My son is graduating in December with a bachelor's degree in information services. His interest is in computer forensics. He is considering the coast guard after he graduates. Is it likely he would be able to work in his chosen field if he enlists in the coast guard? What are the risks of enlisting? Are most people who have joined happy, or do many have regrets? If he enlists, is it typical to negotiate a deal with recruiter? If so, what are typical negotiations?

A. You can talk to a recruiter if you've got one stationed in your town. You'll find a lot of jokers here. Most people entering any branch of the military are happy with that choice. USCG has a computer-related rating, information system technician or IT for short. advantages: + most USCG units are in the continental US, a few in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, Florida Keys, and one in Europe + opportunity to live in another city + housing allowance covers all of his rent in most cities + 1/3 of paycheck isn't taxed (housing, food and clothing allowance makes up about 20-30% of his paycheck) + free gym, either on the base or at a regular gym + he'd get veterans preference/bonuses on applying for government jobs after leaving the… [cont.]

how do you become a diver for the US Coast Guard? And How do you start?
Q. I am in my second year at a J.C. But I really want to join the Coast Guard. How do I start onto becoming a diver and how hard is it to become one?

A. We don't have any career fields that do dive operations as a core function of their jobs. The diver positions we have are what we call collateral positions, so you would have to apply for a specific position that does dive ops. It's pretty tough to get into, because of the high interest in our members.

What does the United States Coast Guard offer for firefighters?
Q. I'm a 25 y/o career firefighter in D.C. and I am looking to switch professions to the Coast Guard. What selection of jobs would I be able to choose from? Will my age hinder the ability to get certain jobs with the coast guard? Thanks in advance.
Asked by Tommy G - Sun Jul 20 17:26:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your age isn't a hindrance yet. You've got less than 2 years of eligibility left. After that you'd have to join as a reservist and then transfer to active duty. The rate most similar to firefighter is damage control technician. You'd be one of the people assigned to the firefighting team on a ship but you'd have other side duties too. Some of the really big bases and training centers have fire stations. Another one similar to firefighter is aviation survival technician. Rescue swimmers are certified as EMTs in addition to able to jump from the helicopters and swimming to sinking boats. You'd be using your EMT skills from being a firefighter. Your fire fighting skills would wither. There are a couple of things that would hinder… [cont.]
