What is it like for families on a military base?
Q. I am writing a book and have searched through Google to try and find about what life is like on a Military Base. The book is base upon the Norfolk Naval base in Virginia. I want to know what military bases are like for families and in general facts. Google has not given me any success on my research and the past week has been irritating with no good results. Thanks!

What are the policies for living/being on a military base with a significant other?
Q. My brother just started living with a woman on a military base. Do they have to be married? And how about being able to bring his kids on the base with him, possibly overnight? What policies does the military have that govern these types of situations? ok, let me clarify...he just left his wife and kids and is shacking up on the base with this woman who is in the military, he is civilian, hoping for a quickie divorce (is there such a thing?) so he can marry this new woman. he also wants to bring the kids on base to visit, possibly overnight as well.

How much economic gain does a military base add to a community?
Q. In other words, what is the average economic gain that a military base brings to a community? I was in the AF for 9 years, and we were always told that we brought in some ridiculous amounts of money. Just wondering if that was all jargon or not because every military base I've ever been to has been located in a real hellhole...or in the middle of nowhere. Thoughts?? I agree with the BRAC list comments...I remember when the DoD closed Fort Dix in NJ. Wrightstown and surrounding areas practically shut down, the only reason they stayed in business was because of Mcguire AFB. Every few years Fort Drum was put on the list and all of upstate NY and Jefferson Co. were screaming to not close the base...err...Fort.

A. a military base brings LOADS of money into a community through civilian jobs, sales taxes through purchases the individuals stationed there make locally, home sales and rent, sales in general to units on the installation through local acquisitions. As for the midle of nowhere or arm pit locations, it most likely they kept them away from "prime locations" due to the noise factor coming from the installations. Also the older ones were built as frontier forts and just updated over teh decades. The newer ones were built where they were because that is where the most land could be easilly gotten with minimal problems like houses to condemn, higher prices near the "good cities & towns) etc.

What are the qualifications for living on a military base?
Q. My husband is currently over seas right now and is about to be coming home in January. During R&R suprise suprise I got pregnant. He is with a National Guard troop. We have been playing with the idea of going active duty. I want to live on Base and save some money and be around other military families. How do we go about doing this and what steps actually need to be taken? He is currently ranked as a SPC.
Asked by olson010208 - Thu Dec 3 18:26:21 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First he has to be active duty. Then it will all depend on where he's stationed- it could be a few weeks to get a house to over six months. You'll get a house based on his pay grade. No worries, they make it easy to sign up for housing. The hard part is waiting.

What are good personal projects I can do on a military base?
Q. So, I've found myself with a lot of extra time for the next two months. I don't deal with inactivity for extended periods of time very well so I'd like some ideas for projects I can work on until my duty schedule changes. Since I'm going to be on a military base the project cannot involve flammable or hazardous materials and must be able to be stored fairly easily. Preferably, it will not be expensive and will involve active thinking or be educational. Thanks for the suggestions!

Can a police officer arrest a soldier from the military base?
Q. Can a police officer or FBI arrest a soldier from the military base, or they can't because of the jurisdiction?
Asked by Jake - Sun Jan 27 21:33:30 2008 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "from" the base? Sure. On the base, the local cop has no authority but the FBI sure does. If the local cop wanted to arrest a soldier who was on the base, for a crime committed in town, he cannot just drive in an get him, but it takes about 2 seconds to get the cooperation of the MPs. If the soldier committed a crime on the base but was in town, the crime on the base is of no concern to the local cop as it is not a violation of state or local law. If the soldier committed the crime in town, and was found in town, he can be arrested and committed to the local jail. That will also make him AWOL from the base. So, once the locals get done, the military gets him on the AWOL.

How can I work on a military base as a civilian employee?
Q. I'm interested in working on military base (esp. in HI). Who is a major employer (federal or private) ? What kind of job and employment status available? I will appreciate it if you can be more specific... Does AAFES directly hire civilians? In Japan, Japanese gov. and private temp co. hire local people for US military. I'm curious how it's different in the States.

A. please go to and click on HI (just about every island there is a base, but look for Oahu, better for civilian choices) I checked for you, there isn't a match for retails (PX's) at this time. you may want to wait til the Christmas seasonal hire or after winter break. I've seen them pop up sometimes. another way is to look around at temp agencies. There might be some match for skilled worker or laborer.

A. Pros to Living on Base: Quality Military Housing Quality housing helps the Department of Defense (DoD) retain the best personnel for its all-volunteer military force. The proportion of personnel remaining in service from bases with high-quality housing is about 15 percent higher than for those stationed at places with low-quality housing. Today's servicemembers want to live in a community that offers stability and continuity as a backdrop for deployment, reassignment, and day-to-day life. Basic Allowance for Housing Servicemembers living on or off base in private-sector/community housing, or in "military privatized housing," are entitled to a basic allowance for housing (BAH). Q. Would you have to go through the usual red tape as a foreigner applying for a work permit? Or would different rules apply since it's a military base? Can a civilian teach on a US military base overseas? If you were interested in teaching Spanish, for example, would they give priority to a US citizen or a native speaker? At what age would you be considered too old?? Thanks!

What US Military over seas, including Hawaii and Alaska, base has the best Officers Club?
Q. What US Military base has the best Officers Club? I am a culinary student, and veteran, and I'm thinking about tapping an Officers Club to do my co-op at.
Asked by Culinary - Mon Sep 21 12:22:32 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Officers clubs have gone the way of Community clubs where all are invited to include officers, NCO's and lower enlisted soldiers. While the three are separated with different clubs that serve alcohol so no fraternization would be inferred if you are going to be a chef or a cook you will more than likely be employed by the community club as a whole. Which one is the best is a subjective matter of the patrons so take your pick. I suppose the best one is the one you are going to end up working at :)

A. America had a lease with a pre-Castro government as a reward for helping kick out the Spanish and they refuse to leave despite repeated requests from the Cubans to leave, and in breach of the treaty. And Cuba is not stupid enough to force the issue because they simply do not have a big enough army nor want to give the Americans an excuse to invade Cuba.

If a civilian receives a traffic citation on a military base does the civilian have the right to an attorney?
Q. Having the right to an attorney means can a civilian attorney have the traffic citation dismissed or plea-bargained down to a lesser charge resulting in less points on the civilian driver's military base driving record.
Asked by pjjoyceus - Mon May 12 18:25:21 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have a right to a lawyer, yes - but you'll have to pay for your own. There is no right to a court appointed attorney for infractions in any US court - State, Federal, or Military. On many bases, there is an administrative procedure for "traffic tickets". If you pay the "administrative penalty" and accept an entry on your base driving record then no actual citation is ever filed - this means that the record stays on-base and doesn't affect your regular driving record, or earn any 'points'. If you choose not to accept this administrative process, a citation is filed. As a civilian, a hearing for a formal traffic infraction will normally be held in your nearest Federal Magistrates Court. If you are found guilty, then it's a fine, not… [cont.]

It's seems as though the best way for us to go about doing this is by getting jobs on a military base and I would love any advice I could get! Here are a few questions we have: How long do we have between getting hired and starting our new jobs? Do we need work visas? Where do we go to find these jobs? Have any of you out there gotten jobs as civilians and if so, how would you describe the process? Thanks guys! (I am in currantly in accounting and my husband is in banking.)
